As-built documentation
As-built documentation shows the equipment or installation as it was actually built and installed, with every change from the original drawings included.
Also known as: as-built, as-built drawings, red-line drawings, record drawings
There are almost always changes during building and installation: a pipe route moves, a component is swapped, a cable takes another path, a program is changed during commissioning. The changes are often marked by hand on the working drawings (red-lining) and then entered in the drawings and documents, which get a new revision marked as-built. The result is the documentation that operations and maintenance will use for years, and the first thing the next person making a modification looks at. As-built differs from as-designed, which shows what was engineered. If the as-built is out of date, the next job starts with troubleshooting and fresh measurements in the field.
