Custom software development: systems built for your business

When off-the-shelf software falls short, we build the system that fits — a line-of-business tool, customer portal, or integration layer. Modern stack, Norwegian requirements covered, source code in your hands.

TL;DR

Custom software development at WOLLUM means software built for your business processes — not an adaptation of off-the-shelf tools. We build line-of-business systems, customer portals, internal tools, and integration layers on Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. First version in production in 6–12 weeks. RoboConnect's B2B platform and our own product Jobbkontroll are built with the same method.

Custom software development is designing, building, and operating software tailored to one business's needs — as opposed to off-the-shelf software the business has to adapt itself to. A custom system covers exactly your processes, integrates with the systems you already have (accounting, ERP, Altinn, EHF), and evolves with the business without per-user licence constraints.

What is included

  • Discovery and requirements

We map the processes the system needs to cover and write a requirements spec you can actually read — with clear priorities, not a hundred pages nobody opens.

  • Architecture and technology choices

Next.js and TypeScript on the frontend, Node.js or Python on the backend, PostgreSQL as the database. Cloud infrastructure on Vercel, Railway, or AWS — chosen for the need, not out of habit.

  • Integrations with Norwegian systems

Tripletex, Fiken, PowerOffice, Visma, Altinn, BankID, Vipps, and EHF/Peppol. The system talks to what you already use.

  • Iterative development with weekly deliveries

You see working software every week, not a big reveal after six months. Direction can be adjusted along the way without contract drama.

  • Operations, documentation, and ownership

You own the source code, data, and infrastructure. We document, train, and offer a maintenance agreement — but you can also operate it yourself.

Typical delivery

6–12 weeks to a first version in production

Discovery and requirements in weeks 1–2. Architecture and design in weeks 2–3. Iterative build with weekly deliveries from week 3. First version in production with a limited user group from weeks 6–12, then further development based on real usage. Larger systems: 3–9 months.

How pricing works

Pricing is set after a scoping phase, as a fixed price per phase.

What you walk away with

  • A system built around your processes — not the other way around
  • Integrated with the accounting, ERP, and public registries you already use
  • Modern, maintainable codebase with no per-user licence costs
  • Full source code, documentation, and data in your hands
  • A partner who can also operate and evolve the system

Typical deliveries

The durations are our estimate for a first version of this type. Time and price for your project are set during scoping.

Delivery Control: project, purchasing and subcontractors in one view

8–14 weeks · first version live

One view of the project while it is running, built around the ERP or accounting system you already have. Hours and purchases are booked against the estimate per work package, change orders are logged with their cost impact, and the weekly status report is generated instead of written. Orders are pulled from the ERP with the agreed delivery date, drawing revision and document requirements, and the subcontractor confirms delivery and uploads certificates through a link per order, with no login. The system chases missing dates and documents on its own.

MRB and documentation package per delivery

8–12 weeks

A document register where every document is linked to project, purchase order, heat number and serial number, with revisions and a checklist per contract based on the customer's document requirements (SDRL). Certificate PDFs are read in on receipt, expiring certificates are flagged before they lapse, and the documentation package is generated as an indexed PDF when the delivery is ready, not the night before. The package can also be delivered as an Excel list or via an API to the customer's system.

Customer portal with service history by serial number

8–12 weeks

A portal where your customers see order status, download documentation and certificates, and see the service history and next service for each serial number, without having to phone. The portal pulls data from the systems you already have. If you want to sell it as a service of its own, we build it as your product, owned by you.

Frequently asked questions

When does custom software beat off-the-shelf?
When your processes are a competitive advantage, when the off-the-shelf tool creates more manual workarounds than it removes, or when per-user licence costs exceed what your own system costs over 3–5 years. We genuinely recommend off-the-shelf when it covers the need — that saves everyone wasted work.
What does custom software development cost in Norway?
We do not quote prices before the scope is known. Pricing is set after a scoping phase, as a fixed price per phase — not open-ended hourly billing. The first step is a scoping phase with a fixed price, where we define the scope and give a binding quote for the first phase.
Do we own the system and the source code?
Yes, fully. Source code, data, design, and infrastructure are yours. We deliver documentation and training, and you can operate it yourself or switch vendors at any time.
Can you take over a system another vendor built?
Yes. We start with a technical review of the codebase (1–2 weeks) and give an honest assessment: continue, refactor, or rebuild. Then we take over operations and development with the same method we use for our own systems.
How do you keep the project from overrunning time and budget?
Fixed price per phase, weekly deliveries of working software, and a requirements spec with clear priorities. Overruns happen when direction is settled too late — our method moves the decisions to the start and makes changes visible immediately.
