Material certificate 3.1
A 3.1 material certificate is an inspection certificate under EN 10204 in which the manufacturer confirms that the material meets the requirements of the order, with results from specific inspection, validated by an inspection representative independent of manufacturing.
Also known as: 3.1 certificate, EN 10204 3.1, inspection certificate 3.1, mill certificate, MTC
The EN 10204 standard describes the types of inspection document a manufacturer of metallic products can issue. Type 2.1 is a declaration of compliance without test results, and type 2.2 gives results from non-specific inspection. Type 3.1 gives results from specific inspection of the material supplied and is validated by the manufacturer's authorised inspection representative, who is independent of the manufacturing department. Type 3.2 is also validated by the purchaser's representative or an inspector designated by official regulations. A 3.1 certificate typically shows chemical composition, mechanical properties and the heat number the material comes from. Traceability means the heat number stamped on the material can be followed from the certificate to every part made from it, and on into the delivery's MRB.
Example
When a supplier buys pipe for a pressurised module, a 3.1 certificate comes with each heat. At goods receipt, the heat number on the pipe is checked against the certificate, and the certificate is linked to the purchase order and to the serial number of what is being built, so it ends up in the right documentation package.
